Residents are advised to follow these extreme heat safety information from the American Red Cross and the State of Connecticut:
1. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of your vehicle can soar to 120 degrees within minutes, even if you are parked in the shade.
2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages.
3. Check on those most at-risk several times a day.
4. Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If you don’t have air conditioning, seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in our cooling stations above.
5. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
6. Limit your outdoor activity and avoid direct sunlight. If you must be outdoors, try to limit your outdoor activity to earlier or later in the day. Try to rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to cool off.
7. Make sure your pets have access to shade and cool, fresh water all day long.
Listen to NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS).
