It’s not too late to register for one of our popular Winter Sowing Workshops, taking place the first week of December at each of the Hamden Library branches.

Bring a clean, empty, transparent gallon milk or water jug — and we’ll provide the rest. You will take home a gallon jug planted with your choice of native and pollinator seeds. All supplies are free.
We thank the following for their generous support: the Greater New Haven Green Fund, the NewAlliance Foundation, the Friends of the Hamden Library and the Hamden Land Conservation Trust.
Free Seeds for Native and Pollinator Plants!
Can’t make it to one of the winter sowing workshops? We will have four special sessions in January to make seeds and instructions available for sowing native and pollinator plants (most are CT natives) at the Hamden Library Seed Library, located on the lower floor of Miller Memorial Library, on the following dates and times:
Thursdays, January 15 and 22 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Saturdays, January 17 and 24 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Stay Tuned for the spring session of the seed library, when we offer a wide variety of veggies, herbs, and ornamental seeds, free for all. While the seed library will be open during all regular Miller Library hours, we will have staff on hand twice a week to offer guidance. Staffed hours will be Thursdays 1-4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 2-4:30 p.m., from February 2 through June 6.
While many of the seeds donated to the Seed Library are from the previous growing year, all have a lot of life left! In addition, through the generosity of the Friends of the Library, we are able to purchase a limited amount of “high-value” seeds, such as tomatoes, which don’t often come to us via donations. And we are excited that more and more of our local gardeners are contributing seeds to share.
Our Continual Thanks
The Seed Library would like to thank The Friends of Hamden Library, NewAlliance Foundation, The Greater New Haven Green Fund, and The Hamden Land Conservation Trust for their generous support and guidance, as well as Select Seed, Hart Seed, New England Seed, Cheshire Garden Center, UConn Master Gardener program, Pardee Rose Garden, and local gardeners who — more and more — are sharing their seed bounty with us.
We are also pleased to thank and recognize the Library Staff, always supportive and encouraging, along with our committed volunteers who provide programming and staff the Seed Library: Betsy, Diane, Jim, Joan, Judie, Laurie, Maria, and Nancy. And a special welcome to our new volunteers: Eleanor and Lani.
Know plants? Are you a Master Gardener or knowledgeable gardener? Feel free to contact us to discuss ways you can volunteer with the Seed Library!
