New Disposal Fees at Transfer Station

The Town of Hamden will implement fees for waste deposited at the Hamden Transfer Station starting Tuesday June 11th, 2024.

New Traffic Pattern and Procedure:
To accommodate the operation of the Transfer Station scale and the payment kiosk, new traffic patterns are currently in place. All vehicles are required to stop and await a green light before advancing to the scale. When given a green light, please advance to the scale and follow the directions of Town staff while exercising caution.

After you have deposited your waste at the Transfer Station, please follow the traffic pattern. Traffic flows in one direction. Follow the traffic flow to the exit and await a green light to advance to the scale. When given a green light, proceed to check out with the staff. Your vehicle will be weighed, and a fee will be calculated.

Please be prepared to stop and follow all signs, traffic signals, and instructions from Town staff. Your patience is appreciated as additional wait times are expected with the implementation of these new processes.

The fee schedule for waste deposited at the Hamden Transfer Station was approved by the Legislative Council in September 2022 (click here for minutes) effective upon the full operation of the scale, including full implementation of the necessary software and hardware. The cost of disposal for municipal solid waste has increased dramatically over the years and will continue to rise in the future due to the closing of many landfills.

While these fees will not fully cover the cost of running and maintaining the Transfer Station, they will prevent the abuse of the Transfer Station. This pricing places Hamden at the low end of the pricing spectrum for smaller amounts of solid waste, and at the higher end of the spectrum for larger amounts of solid waste.

The Town will continue to provide curbside pickup, bulk trash pickup, and leaf and brush collection at no additional charge to Hamden residents.

The entrance to the Hamden Transfer Station is located at 231 Wintergreen Ave. It is open Monday through Friday, 7:30am-11:30am and 12:30pm-3:00pm, and the 1st Saturday of each month from 8:00am – 11:45am. Gates will close promptly at the above closing times, at which time there will be no further vehicle entry.
