Summer Reading Events

The Library invites you to “Catch the Reading Bug” this summer by playing our “buggy” summer reading game .  To play , just keep track of the time you spend reading on a special sheet & mark off a space for every ten minutes of reading time. (Leave the last space blank for your sheet to be stamped.)  After completing each three hour block of time, bring your sheet in to the Library to get it stamped, put a bug on our board and choose a prize.  Complete the sheet (9 hours) & you will have found the honey in the hive and be the Queen (or King!) Bee of Reading.

Read anything that you like!  Books you read for the Hamden public school’s summer reading program or the Governor’s campaign can also count for our program.

Children who are not yet readers can count the time that they are read to.

Lost Library Book Received in Mail from Georgia after 19 years!

Children’s Department Head Librarian Nancy McLaughlin received a book in the mail this week that was due on May 14, 1988!  The unnamed library patrons from Lilburn, Ga. were kind enough to include a note that says “We lost this book when we lived in Hamden, CT and we paid for it.  Since then we found it and I’m returning it to you.  Don’t worry about the purchase price we paid.  Thanks!”  The title is Clipper Ship by Thomas P. Lewis.

Ms. McLaughlin exclaimed, “We can still use this book because it’s a short historical novel in chapters and we need these titles.  This book is in decent enough condition to return to our collection. Beginning readers who enjoy a good historical tale will be able to borrow this book again soon.”

The Library has a new brochure for all interested in Hamden Public Library’s history, the Miller family whose name adorns the Miller Memorial Central Library and Cultural Center, and the quilts and sculpture (including totem pole) prominently displayed at the Miller Library. The brochures in black and white are available at all three library locations: Miller Memorial Central Library at 2901 Dixwell Avenue, the Brundage Community Branch at 91 Circular Avenue, and the Whitneyville Branch, 125 Carleton Street.

A color version of the brochure and detailed descriptions of the two Bicentennial quilts displayed at the library are available at hamdenlibrary.org/quilt.html. Thanks to the Friends of the Hamden Library, our quilts have been cleaned and we have re-hung them for all to enjoy.
